Just Take 20 to Make Reading a Regular Routine!
The habits your child forms while young will last a lifetime! Help your child develop a love of reading that leads to lifelong literacy by making reading a regular part of your daily routine. Experts recommend kids read at least 20 minutes a day. If you stick to this, your child will read over 3,600 minutes a year—wow! You can mix it up by reading to your child, letting your child read to you, or taking turns. Use the tips below to make reading special, fun, and purposeful!
How to Establish a Daily Reading Routine
1. Select a Special Time for Reading Each Day
Choose a consistent time when reading becomes part of your daily rhythm.
2. Choose a Comfortable Place Where You Can Read Together
Pick a cozy spot that makes reading enjoyable and distraction-free.
3. Find a Great Book
If you’re reading to your child, pick something they’ll love—even if it’s their favorite book you’ve read a hundred times. If they’re reading to you, select an easy-to-read book to keep the experience fun. Help with tricky words to maintain their enthusiasm.
4. During and After Reading, Check for Understanding
Ask a few simple questions to spark discussion, such as:
- What happened in the book?
- Who was the book about?
- What was your favorite part?
- Did you like the book? Why or why not?
